Video session
Our own video room
No Zoom, no account, no download. You click in, type your name and are let in.
How it works
You open this page a couple of minutes before your appointment. The browser asks for permission to use your camera and microphone — you need to say yes to that, or your psychologist will not be able to see or hear you. You then see yourself, can check that the sound is working, and type your name. We ask for both first name and surname so your psychologist can see who is waiting — there are often several people with the same first name.
After that you are in the waiting room. Your psychologist can see that you are there and lets you in when it is your turn. Exactly as when the door to the clinic opens.
Why we built it ourselves
A session with a psychologist is one of the most private things there is. We do not like sending it through a service we have no control over. That is why the video session runs on our own server in Europe, and the picture and sound themselves go directly from your computer to your psychologist's, bypassing us.
There is nothing to log in to and nothing to install. When you hang up, the session no longer exists anywhere — unless you have said yes to it being recorded. Then it is transcribed into your record on your psychologist's own computer: the audio never leaves the computer, and only the text goes into your record. If you have also said yes to video, it is filmed for supervision. In that case you did so in your consent to the clinic, and you can always stop the recording in the middle of the meeting.
So it goes well
- Use headphones. It removes echo and keeps the session private if there are others nearby.
- Sit with the light in front of you, not behind you. A window at your back turns you into a silhouette.
- Be somewhere you can speak freely. The car in a car park is a perfectly legitimate choice — many people do it.
- Prop the phone up firmly, if you are using a mobile. A wobbly picture tires you both out.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to install anything?
No. It runs in your browser — Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. On iPhone and iPad it has to be Safari. You do not need to create an account or download any software.
Is the session recorded?
Only if you have said yes to it in your consent to the clinic. By default nothing is stored: sound and picture go directly from your computer to your psychologist's and do not pass through our server. If the two networks cannot reach each other — which happens at some workplaces — the stream is sent through a relay we run, but it is encrypted the whole way, so the relay can neither see nor hear anything.
If you have said yes to the session being recorded, it is transcribed into your record. That happens on your psychologist's own computer: a Danish speech model runs in the browser, the audio never leaves the computer and is deleted as soon as the text is done. Only the text goes into your record — and only once you have hung up: if you ask for it to be deleted, your psychologist can discard it during the meeting. If you press Stop, it stops at once and does not start by itself again that day.
Psychologists have their work reviewed by other psychologists. It is called supervision, it is part of the profession, and for that a session may be recorded — but only if you have said yes to it in your consent, and only for what you said yes to there: supervision, or also teaching psychologists in training. Everyone who sees it is bound by confidentiality.
If you have said yes, the recording starts by itself when the meeting begins — you are not asked again. RECORDING is shown on both your screens for as long as it is running, and on yours it also says why. You can stop it at any time at the press of a button, and if you have stopped it, you are asked before anything is recorded again. The recording is stored encrypted on the clinic's own server until your psychologist deletes it, and no links leave the clinic. If you change your mind afterwards, you can ask to have it deleted — you do not need to give a reason. And you can always withdraw your consent; it makes no difference to your treatment.
Why not just Zoom?
Because we would then be sending you and your session through an American service we have no control over. This is our own room on our own server in Europe. There is no third party involved, and there is no account for you to create.
Can anyone else get into the session?
No. You arrive in a waiting room, and your psychologist lets you in. Only one session can be going on in a room at a time, and no one can enter without the psychologist actively opening the door.
What do I do if the connection drops?
Go to the page again and ask to be let in once more. We keep an eye on it. If it keeps breaking up, turn off your camera — the session then uses far less bandwidth, and the sound gets better. Otherwise we will ring you and do the rest over the phone.
Does it work on a mobile?
Yes. Prop the phone up against something so your hands are free, and ideally use headphones — it gives better sound for both of you and makes the session more private.
