Trauma treatment in Copenhagen

A trauma is not defined by how bad the event was, but by what it did to your nervous system — and whether there was anyone to help you through it.

Two people, the same event, different outcomes

Whether something becomes a trauma depends on three things: how overwhelming it was, how old you were, and — most importantly — whether anyone was there afterwards. A child who is comforted often processes the event. A child who is alone with it stores it away.

That is why the question "was it bad enough to call it a trauma?" is rarely the right one. The right question is whether it is still active.

What we treat

  • Single-event trauma — accidents, assaults, deaths, births that went wrong, acute incidents at work.
  • Repeated trauma — violence, sexual abuse, psychological abuse, bullying over time.
  • Developmental trauma — neglect, unpredictable parents, a childhood where you had to look after yourself.
  • Trauma of flight and exile — where both what happened and having to start all over again are part of it.
  • Secondary traumatisation — in relatives and in professionals who work with other people's trauma.

The treatment

Trauma treatment is a matter of dosage. If you get too close too quickly, the system becomes overloaded and nothing is processed — it is only relived. If you keep too much distance, nothing happens either.

In ISTDP we work on keeping you in the range where the feelings are accessible but the anxiety does not take over. It is an active, close form of therapy in which we follow what is happening in the body the whole time. Where EMDR is better suited, we use that.

As a supplement we offer REAC Neuromodulation, which aims to regulate the nervous system.

Are you in acute distress right now?

We are not an emergency service. If there is immediate danger to yourself or others: call 112. You can also call Livslinien on 70 201 201 (open every day) or contact the psychiatric emergency department in your region.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

I can't remember all of it. Can I still be treated?

Yes. Gaps in memory are common with trauma and are not an obstacle. We work with what the body remembers, not only with what you can tell us.

Will I have to relive it?

No. The aim is processing, not reliving. If things start moving towards reliving, we do something else.

Can old traumas be treated at all?

Yes. Time alone does not heal trauma — that is why it is still there. On the other hand, the age of the trauma does not matter much for whether it can be treated.
