Psychologist for children and young people
Children rarely say that they are not doing well. They show it — with stomach aches, with rage, with refusing to go to school.
When to be concerned
Not over the odd bad week. But when the change persists for more than a few weeks, affects several areas — school, friends, sleep, mood — and the child themselves seems weighed down by it.
Typical starting points: school refusal, anxiety, sadness, violent outbursts of anger, sleep problems, eating difficulties, or a child who has suddenly become very quiet.
How we work
With younger children, we often work just as much with the parents as with the child. That is not because anything is the parents' fault — it is because parents are the most effective tool there is, and because a child cannot carry a change through on their own.
With young people it is different. Here, confidentiality is crucial, and we talk with the young person alone, with clear agreements about what is passed on.
What we offer
- Individual sessions with the child or young person
- Sessions and guidance for parents
- Family sessions, where the whole system takes part
- Trauma treatment for children and young people
- Sessions in connection with divorce
Consent
Children under 15 require consent from whoever holds custody (forældremyndighed). If custody is joint, both parents will normally need to give consent. We help get this in place.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
How old do children need to be?
We see children from around 5-6 years old, but it depends on the child and on the problem. Feel free to call and ask.
Does the child need to come to the first session?
Often not. We frequently recommend that the parents come first, so the child does not have to bear being cast as the problem.
Will we be told what our teenager says?
Not word for word. We make clear agreements from the start about what is shared — and we break confidentiality if there is a risk of harm.
